Some Random World Cup Thoughts
Firstly, damn...Koller's just been injured. Looks bad - probably his hamstring. That's my 80/1 outsider for the golden boot shot to pieces.
Secondly, isn't it about time that managers gave Shaka Hislop the respect he deserves. He always seems to start out as second choice to someone else. He re-joined West Ham as understudy to the mercurial Roy Carroll, he was second choice to Kelvin Jack in the T&T team, he even ended up second choice at Portsmouth. Luckily for West Ham and Trinidad and Tobago, the first choice goalkeepers got injured and Hislop stepped up to the plate once again to show what a class keeper he is and always has been.
Give the guy some respect.
Thirdly, the rumours coming out of the England camp that Rooney will play in the Trinidad and Tobago match....don't be so bloody stupid. England shouldn't risk Rooney until absolutely necessary. A match against T&T isn't necessary. Manchester United are already threatening to sue Sven and the F.A if Rooney so much as gets heatstroke. Why take the risk ? Idiots.

France set to unleash secret weapon on World Cup
France look set to turn to Marseille midfielder Frank Ribery to inject new ideas into their attack when they start their World Cup challenge against Switzerland on Tuesday.
French newspaper L'Equipe reported that Ribery would replace the out-of-form David Trezeguet as coach Raymond Domenech rips up his tactics book.
Ribery, in just his fourth international appearance, would play alongside Zinedine Zidane and Sylvain Wiltord in a midfield designed to supply sole striker Thierry Henry as the 1998 winners seek to bury the nightmare of their 2002 campaign.
Ribery, 23, has risen to Domenech's attention only in the last few weeks after a series of scintillating performances for his club.
Midfield veteran Claude Makelele has been impressed by the young tyro.
"Frank is the sort of player who can bring a lot to a team in 15 or 20 minutes," Makelele said.
Ribery only made his debut as a substitute in France's friendly against Mexico late last month and received a standing ovation from the 80,000 Stade de France crowd.
The warmup game against China last week will be remembered for Djibril Cisse's broken leg, but Ribery came off the bench to give the French attack new urgency and helped them to a 3-1 win.
Ribery, who has a long scar down his face, caused by a childhood car crash, enjoys strong support back home - a French newspaper poll found 66 percent of fans believed he should play against the physical Swiss.
Lyon defender Eric Abidal said the man he describes as "my friend, like family" gives a new dimension to an ageing lineup.
"Each time he's played he's brought freshness, vivacity and technique to the team.
"He creates chances. I think it's great for the team, he pushes the side forward regardless of how many minutes he's on the pitch."
Domenech - who raised eyebrows by opting for Ribery and leaving the more experienced Ludovic Giuly and Johan Micoud out of the squad - has said he wants to exploit the Marseille man's carefree attitude.
"He's someone who is happy to be around, who knows he might play for 10 minutes, quarter of an hour, or not at all but knows he must be ready all the time and never kicks up a fuss," said the coach.
Ribery, born in the Channel port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, is a colourful character who played briefly for Galatasaray in Turkey and converted to Islam after marrying a French woman of Algerian descent.

match result ITALY 2-0 GHANA
Italy defeated African first-timers Ghana 2-0 in an exciting Group E fixture in Hanover on Monday, 12 June 2006.
A Ghana team making their FIFA World Cup™ debut contributed richly to the spectacle but Italy's greater know-how told as they won through goals from Andrea Pirlo and substitute Vincenzo Iaquinta.
After both sides had missed a succession of chances, Pirlo broke the deadlock with a shot through a crowded penalty area after 40 minutes. Iaquinta sealed the win after latching onto Samuel Kuffour's underhit back-pass with seven minutes remaining.
The match:
8': Italy rattled Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingston with an early series of crosses and corners, culminating in defender Fabio Cannavaro heading the ball over the crossbar.
11': Ghana captain Stephen Appiah had a free-kick on the edge of the box in a promising position, but he struck it straight into Italy's wall. The Italians immediately launched a counterattack and when Luca Toni missed from point-blank range, the ball broke to Alberto Gilardino. He managed to squirm a shot through Kingston's legs but it trickled towards goal and hit the post before going out for another corner.
16': Francesco Totti, back in the Italy side after recovering from a broken leg, was almost unrecognisable with his new close-cropped haircut and there was an unfamiliar look to his first proper shot as it missed the target by some distance.
18': Italy's Alessandro Nesta had to climb high to flick the ball away from Borussia Dortmund striker Matthew Amoah, who would have had a free header on goal if Michael Essien's cross had managed to reach him.
27': Toni smacked a thundering shot against Ghana's crossbar and John Mensah chested the rebound back to Kingston to relieve the pressure.
30': Essien charged towards the Italy penalty area and launched a powerful strike which just missed Gianluigi Buffon’s right-hand post, matching a similar effort by Asamoah Gyan moments earlier from the opposite flank.
33': Totti found his range from 25 metres with a free-kick that stung Kingston's fingertips before it went over. Not for the first time, the Ghana keeper came out to meet the resulting corner and missed it, but Cannavaro's header landed on the top of the net.
40': Italy's tenth corner was played short to Pirlo who sent a scorching shot through a crowd of bodies to finally beat Kingston right in the corner (1-0).
45': Kingston does well to block a goalbound effort by Fabio Grosso.
Kingston clearance
53': Kingston had to rush out of his area to deny Toni and the Ankaraspor goalkeeper did well to lift the ball over his head and allow John Pantsil to bring it to safety.
54': Ghana’s Essien brought the best out of Buffon, who had to dive at full stretch to his right to beat away a forceful drive from 20 metres out by the Chelsea midfielder.
64': With Italy less dominant than in the first half and the passionate Ghanaian contingent in full voice, Essien threatened again but this time he dragged his effort well wide after bursting forward.
67': As play flowed freely from end to end, Simone Perrotta tested Kingston with a shot from inside the area. Kingston will have gained great confidence from a strong save which denied the Roma midfielder, who appeared set to extend Italy’s lead.
79': Gyan had the Italian defence in knots with a twisting, turning run just outside the area. As he tried to move into the box, the Modena striker tumbled over the legs of two defenders but Brazilian referee Carlos Simon waved play on.
83': A mistake by the last defender Kuffour gifted Italy their second goal as he sold his goalkeeper short with a back-pass and substitute Iaquinta was only too grateful to latch onto it and round Kingston before sliding the ball into an empty net (2-0).
In conclusion:
Italy got the better of Ghana in another entertaining, free-flowing contest, but the Africans acquitted themselves extremely well in their first appearance at the FIFA World Cup and a second-half equaliser always looked possible until Iaquinta finished them off

Y' See Sven...If You Use Tactics, You Get Results
In complete contrast to England's turgid 1-0 victory over Paraguay, Australia's 3-1 win over Japan today showed just how much of a positive difference good tactical changes can make to a game.
Sven - in England's match - took Owen off because, he said, "we weren't keeping the ball well enough", put on Downing and Hargreaves (neither of whom could keep the ball) and turned a fairly good England performance into a travesty.
By contrast, Gus Hiddinck - seeing his Australia side 1-0 down and outplayed by the skillful Japanese - put on Tim Cahill to add another attacking dimension to the side, changed things around a little and introduced two new strikers, including ex-Coventry man John Aloisi. The result: Australia won 3 -1. The scorers ? Cahill and Aloisi.
That's what top class management is. Having something in reserve and knowing when and how to use it. I hope Mr Eriksson was paying attention.

More Than Just Unlucky?
Only the more partisan cannot feel some degree of sympathy for Djibril Cisse. It’s shitty luck to break your leg six days before the World Cup in a “meaningless” warm up game. The nature of the challenge, as it was with the other leg break, was innocuous and unintentional but both resulted in a similar injury.
I did wonder whether he has some bone disorder, as it didn’t look bad enough for a break - certainly not compared to Abou Diaby’s at Sunderland. Further to this, if there is a problem why was it not identified? Chances are the poor bastard just has bad luck, and according to the team doctors he should be back fairly swiftly.
If he was to be rushed back before completely healing, it could set him back further, of course. Sound familiar?

Germany 4 - Costa Rica: 2 And No Defence On Either Side
Well, as opening World Cup matches go, that was a gem. 6 goals, lots of attacking football and, well, no defending at all. What more could you want ?
Going forward, the combination of Borowski (in place of the injured-or not- Ballack), Schweinsteiger, Klose and Podolski was impressive - quick, accurate passing and a complete lack of fear.
At the back...well, admittedly Paulo Wanchope is a class act and pretty much the only top level striker in the group. But if Germany play like that against any quality team, they will lose. They were woeful defensively.
It was funny to see Oliver Kahn sitting on the bench looking smugly amused after Wanchope's second goal went in, though.

I know my blog kinda got side tracked...well, here they are.....Todays Hot Sexy Soccer Ladies...I still have know who I'm cheering for....Croatia, Italy, France, Brazil I'm really starting to like the Italian and USA combination....what do you think?
Well, it's been a great opening day for the 2006 World Cup with Ecuador having defeated Poland 2-0. Ecuador, it seems, are a team with a very strong defence - especially Espinoza - and their victory really opens up Group A.
Personally, I'm not particularly surprised at Poland's performance or lack of creative edge, but I wouldn't like to predict which two teams from this Group will go through to the next round. One thing is for sure...neither England nor Sweden in Group B will be particularly concerned about who they might meet if they qualify.
It was a tactically solid performance from Ecuador of the type that you expect to see in a World Cup Finals. The football itself wasn't amazing quality but it all bodes extremely well for the competition as a whole if the standard set by these two games is maintained.

FIFA’s new rules for WC 2006
You can read more in detail here but the following offences are what referees will have been told to look out for and deal with:
Serious foul play
Lunging Red card.
Elbowing (intentional) Red card
Elbowing (reckless) Yellow card
Shirt-pulling Yellow card
Handball Foul. Yellow or red card according to circumstances
Simulation (certain, not probable) Yellow card
Shirt removal Yellow card
Time wasting
Taking free-kick from wrong place Yellow card
Taking too long to go off after subbed Yellow card
Kicking or carrying ball away from free-kick Yellow card
Wrestling ball at free-kick or after goal scored Yellow card
Delaying throw-in and handing to team-mate Yellow card
While it’s good to see some issues being addressed, particularly the issue of players committing a foul then holding onto the ball to prevent the opposition taking a quick free kick I’m worried that the ‘lunging’ edict is still far too open to interpretation.
Certainly two-footed tackles should merit a red card, they need to be stamped out of the game (no pun intended) once and for all, but does a one footed lunge or sliding tackle which gets the ball merit punishment?
We’ll have to wait and see what happens but you can see how certain players will make the most of the challenge even if the ball has been one. While we all love the tricks and flicks and great goals we shouldn’t forget good defending and strong, clean tackling as a skill which is often overlooked. If we take away the defender’s ability to do that then the game just won’t be the same in my opinion.
It will also be interesting to see how the shirt pulling rule is enforced. The first time there’s a corner should be telling because some defenders nowadays see their job as to prevent the attacker getting near the ball through shirt pulling and obstruction rather than actually getting to the ball first themselves. If shirt pulling is a yellow card and it happens in the box is it also a penalty?
2 days to the kick-off, no doubt the first weekend of games will be littered with cards and refereeing inconsistencies which just goes to show no matter how much FIFA change everything stays the same really.
